Is it really a “six-sided warrior”? ByteDance's new model Seed3D 1.0 gets put to the test!

It must be said, China's large models are truly showing a diverse and vibrant landscape.

On October 23rd, ByteDance's Seed team unveiled the next-generation 3D generative large model Seed3D 1.0! Officially described as a 3D foundational model, it combines physical simulation accuracy with scalability, enabling “end-to-end generation from a single 2D image to photorealistic 3D assets.” In other words, without complex operations, ordinary users can quickly obtain a complete 3D model featuring detailed geometry, realistic textures, and physically based rendering (PBR) materials using just a single photo.

Built on the innovative Diffusion Transformer architecture and trained on massive datasets, this model ensures multi-view consistency and material realism in 3D generation. Additionally, 3D models generated by Seed3D 1.0 can be seamlessly imported into simulation engines like Isaac Sim, requiring minimal adaptation to support embodied intelligence large model training. In step-by-step scene generation, Seed3D 1.0 can expand from generating individual objects to constructing complete 3D environments.

To demonstrate its capabilities, the R&D team selected 43 input images and conducted a comparative analysis of six different 3D generation methods across six key dimensions. The results show that Seed3D 1.0 exhibits excellent performance across all dimensions. It not only accurately restores the geometric structure of objects but also reproduces various texture styles and spatial relationships from reference images, truly a “well-rounded performer”! (Note: The currently popular Hunyuan3D-2.1 is also included in the comparison chart~)

However, many netizens and professional modelers aren't swayed by mere “data”—they want to see the horse run before they buy it! So, we immediately conducted a hands-on test of Seed3D 1.0.

After entering the Volcano Engine experience portal, the entire process is remarkably straightforward: Select the Seed3D 1.0 visual model → Upload an image → Click “Generate.” No professional settings are required throughout, and the interface design is clean and uncluttered—no complex parameter panels. Even complete beginners with zero 3D modeling experience can complete the process in under a minute. The left-hand function bar lets you choose between default textures, white models, or wireframes, and you can also disable auto-rotation for detailed inspection.

A quick reminder for users preparing to try this out: If you experience extremely slow page loading after uploading images for Seed3D 1.0 in the Experience Center, remember to check whether the service is activated in the Volcano Engine left toolbar > Service Activation Management. If not activated, you'll need to enable it manually. Currently, without activation, tasks are processed through an alternative pipeline, resulting in significant queue delays. After enabling the service, users receive a free quota of 2 million tokens. With default parameter settings, this supports approximately 100 standard 3D model generations! Once the free quota is exhausted, billing occurs at a rate of 0.0800 CNY per thousand tokens.

01.

Geometric Generation

According to official data, Seed3D 1.0 achieved higher ULIP-I and Uni3D-I scores in geometric generation evaluations, demonstrating high-precision alignment between generated geometry and input images. For this round of testing, I selected an image of a soccer ball on a cardboard box and a photo of an intricately carved figurine to evaluate Seed3D 1.0's performance!

As seen, Seed3D 1.0 successfully reconstructed the soccer ball shape in the left image. However, my original intent was for it to reconstruct both the cardboard box and the badminton shuttlecock container. After several attempts, it only recognized the soccer ball. So, let's focus on the soccer ball! The rotation effect in the video is clearly off—the black pentagonal sections of the soccer ball appear jumbled, and the lighting on the ball's surface is too dark with harsh, unnatural shadows. Overall, I'd give it a 60 out of 100. It seems that Seed3D 1.0 has a solid foundation in shape reproduction, but it struggles with precise recognition of subjects featuring complex pattern distributions.

Next, I tested a deer girl figurine. This time, Seed3D 1.0 achieved relatively high fidelity—the antler shape, character attire, and wave details on the base were all quite accurate. Unfortunately, there was a slight color discrepancy, and upon closer inspection, the leg rendering wasn't entirely smooth. Still, it's not a major issue—a solid 90-point performance~

02.

PBR Material Generation

As the “textural soul” of 3D models, the fidelity of PBR materials directly determines the upper limit of a model's realism—after all, even the most precise geometry can instantly lose credibility with blurry textures. The developers emphasize that Seed3D 1.0 can generate “physically based rendering (PBR) materials”, showcasing impressive demos of ceramics and tableware. To test this claim, I used a glossy handbag model.

For e-commerce businesses, this feature is genuinely practical. Traditional PBR material creation requires mastering lighting physics principles and proficient use of specialized tools like Substance Painter, often demanding hours or even days to refine parameters. Now, a single photo can yield near-commercial-grade material effects in minutes, generating 3D products with authentic textures for 720° online display, allowing consumers to intuitively experience every detail. Business owners, are you excited yet?

03.

Asset Generation for Simulation

This section covers what we previously mentioned: embodied intelligence large model training. To import 3D models into simulators, Seed3D 1.0 employs a Visual Language Model (VLM) to estimate and scale each model to real-world physical dimensions. Simultaneously, Isaac Sim automatically generates collision meshes from watertight manifold geometries and applies default physical properties (like friction coefficients), enabling instant physics simulation without manual tuning.

My immediate thought was its application in industrial components. I selected a gear diagram featuring threaded holes—16 teeth, module 2, tooth width 10cm—and had Seed3D 1.0 generate it.

As seen in the video, the generated gear correctly has 16 teeth. However, the module 2 was only recognized on one side, while the other side was missed. Additionally, the original image only had 4 holes on the inner ring, but Seed3D 1.0 generated 4 holes on one side and 5 on the other. This flaw clearly fails to meet the high precision requirements of industrial applications. It appears Seed3D 1.0's current comfort zone remains more suited for everyday drawing tasks.

04.

Scene Generation

This final test challenges Seed3D 1.0's “understanding capabilities”. Referencing the official demo video, Seed3D 1.0 utilizes VLM to extract object instances and their spatial relationships from images, generating corresponding geometric structures and material information for each identified object. Finally, it assembles and positions all generated objects based on the spatial layout predicted by VLM.

This was the feature I anticipated most, so I promptly fed it an office area diagram. Visually, Seed3D 1.0 accurately identified the spatial distribution—desks and chairs were positioned correctly. However, the tattered chair backs, floating computers, and potted plants... Is this a horror movie?

In summary, my biggest takeaway from Seed3D 1.0 is that it has clear positioning but room for improvement.

For non-professional users like e-commerce merchants, short-video creators, and content creators, its value is undeniable — no need to learn complex modeling software or invest significant time polishing details. A single photo can rapidly generate usable 3D assets for product displays, short-video scene builds, or creative prototypes for content creation, drastically reducing production cycles and costs.

However, when looking toward broader industry applications, Seed3D 1.0's shortcomings become equally apparent. In scenarios demanding extreme precision—such as industrial design, precision manufacturing, and architectural modeling—its current detail reproduction capabilities fall significantly short. As demonstrated by our gear model test, even a single hole position error could render it unusable for practical needs. Regarding complex scene generation, its limitations in multi-object recognition and spatial logic control currently prevent it from handling more advanced scene construction tasks.

That said, we shouldn't judge a newly released 1.0 model against “perfection standards”. Reflecting on AI image generation's evolution—from early blurry distortions to today's photorealistic results—it achieved this leap in just a few short years. Seed3D 1.0's demonstrated strengths in PBR material reproduction and its clear product positioning have already laid a solid foundation for future iterations. With accumulating training data and algorithmic refinements, improvements in precision control and multi-object recognition are highly anticipated.
